Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has told a local TV morning show government can’t give each vulnerable poor family Shs1m as Covid19 lockdown relief package.

On June 20, Nabbanja revealed government would send mobile money cash payments to vulnerable poor families, starting in the urban centers.

On June 21, she told NBS TV presenter Simon Kaggwa Njala the new method of extending relief, compared to the first lockdown when maize flour and beans were delivered to the urban vulnerable poor, would eliminate the middlemen.

“I know the middle-men are not happy because they will be cut off,” Nabbanja said.

She added that Ugandans ought to use the money well.

“For those who have no telephone numbers, we shall use the vouchers. Ugandans are responsible for their lives, they can make good use of the money.”

Asked how much the package will be, the prime minister said no figure had been reached but was certain it would be a one-off but not Shs1m.

“How can you think about Shs 1 million? We don’t have that money. Aren’t you a Ugandan?” Nabbanja asked show host Njala when he asked if the vulnerable urban poor families would get Shs1m, each.
