LIST: Here are the categories of essential workers allowed to move during 42 days of Uganda’s lockdown

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni declared a total lockdown on June 18 after Uganda registered an upsurge in Covid19 cases and deaths.

In the first declaration of lockdown in 2020 when he left then Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda and his office to come up with a list of who qualified as an essential workers.

Debate raged on, especially after some groups such as lawyers were left out.

While declaring a total lockdown, Museveni offered a list of essential workers and institutions which must “fully function” in order “for our lives to continue.”

This list has the following:

(a) Agriculture
(b) Industry, manufacturing and tourism
(c) Health and medical services
(d) Security (police and army)
(e) Utilities (water, electricity, mass media, telecoms, banking institutions, garbage/waste management, retail shops and markets)
(f) Cargo transport and goods distribution.
