First son and Commander Land Forces (CLF) Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has asked his father Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni to forgive former police chief Gen Kale Kayihura.

A formerly trusted long serving Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayihura ran out of favour with Museveni in March 2018 when the president fired him alongside then security minister Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Tumukunde.

Five months later, in August 2018, the previously powerful Gen Kayihura found himself behind the dock at the General Court Martial for failure to protect war materials contrary to Section 122 of the UPDF Act of 2005 and FOR aiding and abetting the kidnap and repatriation of Rwandan refugees in Uganda contrary to Sections 19 and 242 of the Penal Code Act.

The military court would later release Kayihura about three months later on a Shs10m bond, with his sureties — Lt Gen James Mugira of the National Enterprises Corporation, then deputy CLF Commander Maj Gen Sam Kavuma and Entebbe MP Rosemary Tumusiime as his sureties.

Since then, people in Kayihura’s home district of Kisoro such as district boss Abel Bizimana have been asking Museveni to forgive the general.

Now, Kayihura seems to be having lobbyists in the first family, with CLF Lt Gen Kainerugaba openly asking his father to forgive the ex-police chief.

Kainerugaba has told his father that Kayihura was so special and a great inspiration to Uganda and that his sins should be forgiven.

“Gen K Kayihura was one of those special cadres in the early 1990s who inspired us to serve our nation. Others were late Generals Mayombo and Kazini,” said the first son.

“If he made mistakes, let us use revolutionary methods of work to rectify them. I request the CIC to forgive and rehabilitate him.”
