It’s just months after the 2021 presidential election but some strategists already have their eyes on the 2026 poll. Last week, supporters of first son-in-law Odrek Rwabwogo came out to announce a campaign to popularize his election bid.

A group named ‘The Odrek Disciples’ says there is no Ugandan capable of succeeding President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni in 2026 than his son-in-law Odrek Rwabwogo, husband to the president’s daughter Patience.

President Museveni is yet to announce he will retire in 2026 but some NRM members such as ‘Odrek Disciples’ coordinator Yosia Mugaaju think time is up for the 77-year-old to oversee a transition from him to another capable leader like Rwabwogo.

Mugaaju and fellow Odrek Disciples say “as a society of curious youths, we have always suffered that persistent hysteria” related to the “unresolved question of the post- Museveni Uganda.”

“Upon circumnavigation of personalities that would ideologically succeed president Museveni, Mr. Odrek Rwabwogo overwhelmed our speculation. We zeroed on him as a potential successor,” says Mugaaju and his Odrek Disciples group.

But now, Mugaaju has revealed they have not talked to Rwabwogo to ask him to succeed Museveni.

“This is not to say that, Mr. Odrek Rwabwogo has sanctioned or approved our ‘nomination’ of him as our favorite successor,” said Mugaaju.

“However, as citizens of this country, it behooves us to choose a person in the interest of Uganda as a country, the interest or disinterest of such a person notwithstanding.”

The Odrek Disciples coordinator also revealed a plan to officially ask Rwabwogo to stand for president in 2026.

“Indeed, in the nearest future, we shall tender our request to Mr. Odrek Rwabwogo for acceptance. We will celebrate if he honors the same,” further noted Mugaaju.
