JOBS ALERT: Museveni Government Announces 2,700 Job Vacancies

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government is expected to hire nearly 2,700 Ugandans to take up teaching jobs in at least 37 districts and municipalities.

The country’s Ministry of Education and Sports has confirmed that it has received funds for the recruitment of up to 2,655 new primary teachers.

The recruitment exercise is expected to bridge the staffing gaps in the selected local governments. Education Ministry Permanent Secretary Ketty Lamaro has been quoted as saying the recruitment exercise will begin with immediate effect.

On August 08, 2022, PS Lamaro wrote to District Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs), who the local government accounting officers, assuring them that government had secured funds to recruit new teachers in primary schools.

In total, Shs13bn has been set aside for the recruitment exercise and will be spent this financial year as an additional allocation to clear wages of the candidates who will be successful.

In her letter, Lamaro made it clear that the allocation of additional funds, secured under the Inter-Governmental Transfers (UgIFT), was targeting “the least staffed local governments to improve service delivery and equity.”

A project of the World Bank, UGIFT has, among other things, been increasing capitation grants to public schools; supporting recruitment of teaching staff; as well as supporting the construction of 259 seed secondary schools in sub counties, since 2018.

The recruited teachers will be paid under the recently released new salary structure for the 2022-2023 Financial Year. (See New Salary Structure Showing How Much Each Government Employee Will Be Earning Every Month Here).

News for the recruitment exercise for primary school teachers comes a few weeks after Janet Museveni’s Education Ministry, through the Education Service Commission (ESC), released the names of 3,000 secondary school teachers who were given government payroll jobs. But there were reports that Education Service Commission bosses pocketed bribes to favour those who could afford to pay commissioners between Shs2m and Shs5m. (Read Story Here).
