Kamya had been in opposition, serving as Rubaga North MP under the FDC party, and later founding her own political party, Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA).

In 2011, she stood for president, losing to President Museveni.

She would later abandon opposition to take up an NRM government role as minister for Kampala.

In late 2019, Museveni transferred Kamya to the ministry of lands, housing and urban development.

In January 2021, she lost the Rubaga North parliamentary election to NUP’s Abubaker Kawalya.

In June 2021, he dropped her from cabinet, offering her a special advisor job.
