You did your part but removing a ‘dictator’ isn’t easy: Rubongoya consoles Bobi Wine as Museveni swears in

National Unity Platform (NUP) secretary general Lewis Rubongoya has consoled party leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine as President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni took oath of office for a sixth successive elective five-year term.

Museveni swore in May 12 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

On the same day, NUP had declared prayer and fasting.

Bobi Wine came second in the January 14 presidential election, but rejected results announced by the Electoral Commission (EC).

He challenged Museveni’s re-election in the Supreme Court but pulled out his election petition, citing alleged bias on the side of judges.

He vowed to take his petition to the public court, declared protests, and lobbied the international community to slap sanctions against Museveni.

But Museveni finally took oath, after which he told Ugandans elections were over now, blasted western powers for lecturing him on democracy, and called for African Unity.

Now, Rubongoya, a former ruling NRM party member, has consoled Bobi Wine telling him he had done his best.

The NUP SG repeated the claim that Bobi Wine, whose party got overwhelming support in the principal’s home subregion of Buganda, had won the election.

“You did your part. You spoke to the nation. The nation heard you. The nation voted you. By a stroke of a pen and in broad daylight, the people were robbed of their victory. The mambas and the guns roamed and raged. The people were silenced, but not subdued,” said Rubongoya.

“It’s never easy, it was never going to be. Yet we soldier on. Deep in my heart, I do believe that our freedom is not far away.”
