Shock as City Pastor’s Bodyguards Confess to Robbing, Beating Church Member; Convicted, Handed Jail Terms

The High Court in Kampala has found three  bodyguards of Christian Life Church Pastor Jackson Ssenyonga guilty of robbery and sentenced them to years in prison.

Justice Muwata handed Godfrey Mwanda aka Kefa five years behind bars and Israel Wasswa two years in jail. Also joining Mwanda and Wasswa in Luzira Prison will be Ivan Wanyama, a man who makes chapatti. Wanyama will spend 10 years in Luzira prison for inflicting a lot of violence on Sam Mukula, the man who had gone to worship at Christian Church only to be robbed of his money and mobile phone.

The fourth suspect, identified as Ali Ojulango, was not in court. Justice Isaac Muwata has since ordered his arrest.

Prosecution told court that on June 08, 2018, while at Christian Life Church in Makerere Kavule, the four used blunt objects to inflict permanent injuries on Mukula’s stomach and arm after robbing him of Shs500,000 and a mobile phone.

Justice Muwata agreed with the witnesses who pinned the four suspects for being behind the act. Their attempts to argue that it was at night and that the witnesses would not have clearly identified the people behind the violent act fell flat after it became clear that there were lights at the scene of crime.

The convicts had also offered conflicting accounts, with one of them confessing to having taken part in the crime and implicating others.

State attorney Jonathan Muwaganya had prayed for a death sentence for the convicts but Justice Muwata declined to grant this prayer. The convicts had also pleaded for lighter sentences.
