National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Dr Fred Tanga Odoi has explained why the ruling party lost the Oyam North byelection to opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).
Late Thursday night, UPC candidate Dr Eunice Otuko Apio was declared the winner of Oyam North parliamentary by-election.
He beat Samuel Okello Engola junior of President Museveni’s NRM to replace former junior labor minister Col (Rtd) Charles Engola who was shot by his bodyguard. (See Details Here).
Tanga Odoi has attempted to explain why the ruling party lost the byelection to replace the fallen minister.
He cited voter apathy as one of the reasons behind the low voter turnout in the byelection which the NRM lost by about 600 votes.
He also blamed agricultural activities for the low voter turnout since people in the district are busy with farming during this season and could not have thought it wise to miss going to their gardens so they could go and cast their ballots.
Tanga Odoi also cited propaganda for the low voter turnout and NRM’s loss in Oyam North. He claimed that some people were saying the election was going to be postponed and that security personnel were going to beat up people.
He suspects that is one of the reasons why a number of people declined to go to the polling stations.
Dr Tanga Odoi then gave some really shocking reasons as to why the party lost.
He claimed that it rained more heavily in the NRM strongholds, making it difficult for people to go to polling stations.
Sharing his views via the Next Big Talk show this Saturday morning, Tanga Odo said he doesn’t know what kind of witchcraft the NRM’s opponents had deployed to make rain more heavily in the ruling party’s strongholds. He seemed to say that God was not good to the NRM IN Oyam North.
