Former leader of opposition in Parliament (LoP) says she won’t seek reelection as Kasese Woman MP, and will take leave from active politics.
In a statement issued on July 14, Kiiza praised opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) former presidents Dr Kizza Besigye and Mugisha Muntu “for according me opportunities that highlighted my leadership qualities.”
Kiiza was the first female LoP. After Muntu lost to Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the party relieved Kiiza of her duties, replacing her with Gulu Woman MP Betty Aol Ocan.
She also thanked the people of Kasese for the “incredible honour and privilege” and “for placing their trust in me to serve them and our country at large.”
“I have much respect for all individuals, groups, organisations and institutions that support all my efforts, and it’s my humble prayer that you be rewarded,” she continued.
“In a special way, I thank my lovely husband Hon. Bwambale Yokasi Bihande, family and friends for the support all through this journey.”
The former Kasese District Councillor for Kyondo-Kisinga sub-counties said she wanted to walk the talk on the ideal of not clinging onto power.
“For a long time we have talked against overstay in power, and I think it’s the right time to take the lead,” Kiiza wrote.
“I can only feel successful if I participate in the election of my successor so that together we can shape the destiny of our community.”
Kiiza has represented Kasese women in Parliament for 15 years. She joined Parliament in 2016 after serving as a Councillor for seven years.

Political observers expected her to join Muntu’s Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) and stay in politics.
Muntu praised Kiiza for her service and said he had no regrets for ever appointing her LoP.
“Over and over again, I have seen her put country before self in both word and deed. As Leader of Opposition, Hon. Kiiza presided over one of the most inclusive and competent shadow governments we have had,” her wrote.
“Appointing her to that position was one of my best and easiest decisions.”
He wished her well in her next step of life.
“On behalf of ANT, I take this opportunity to thank you Hon Winnie Kizza fo your service to country and for showing us all what happens when we put our oath to serve before our personal ambitions for gain.
“Whatever your next chapter is we wish you all the very best.”
