WHICH WAY KADAGA? Ex-Speaker to Announce Decision on Joining Race to Replace Late Jacob Oulanyah

Former speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga is expected to make an official announcement on the race to replace late speaker Jacob L’Okori Oulanyah. 

Kadaga is said to have held meetings with MPs’ in support of her candidature at her home in Muyenga, Kampala, on March 21.

Currently serving as the first deputy prime minister and minister of East African Community Affairs, Kadaga had never attended any plenary session since she lost to Oulanyah in the May 2021 speaker race.

On March 20, President Museveni announced that Speaker Oulanyah had died. (Read Story Here).

As we reported earlier, no parliamentary business can take place other than the election of the speaker if the position falls vacant. (Read Story Here).

Cabinet has now set a date for the election of a new speaker to replace Oulanyah. (Read Story Here).

Hours after the announcement of election date, Anita Among reportedly expressed interest in replacing the late Oulanyah as speaker. (Read Story Here).

But Kadaga was said to be still making consultations on whether to run or not.

Other reports claimed that the Kamuli District Woman MP and her allies had reached a decision that she expresses her interest in the NRM flag for the speakership.

On March 22, Kadaga is expected to make an official announcement on whether she will stand or not.
