Health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has issued a warning to Ugandans to protect themselves from catching the omicron variant of Covid19, saying it can still have severe consequences on some groups of people.
With restrictions eased and economy reopening months ago, most Ugandans have stopped observing prevention guidelines such as hand washing, face mask wearing and observance of the social distance.
Uganda’s Ministry of Health (MoH) also seems to have stopped issuing daily updates on the number of new infections and deaths. Generally, it looks like many think that the Covid19 pandemic is behind us. In fact some people are now more worried of monkey pox than Coronavirus.
But Minister Aceng is warning that although there might not be a new wave of infections as was the case during the time of the pandemic, Ugandans should not stop observing prevention guidelines.
Before the lifting of lockdown measures, the world was battling the Omicron variant of Covid19. This strain is said to largely cause mild infection. But Aceng has reminded the country that those with underlying condition are at risk of suffering severe disease. Aceng, who is also the Lira City MP, has also renewed calls for Ugandans, particularly the elderly, to go for booster shots.
“As the Covid19 situation keeps evolving, the importance and effectiveness of a booster dose vaccine becomes more relevant than ever. We need to protect those 50 years and above, those with co-morbidities and everybody. Let’s get vaccinated/boosted and consistently wear face masks,” Aceng wrote on June 03, the day when thousands thronged Namugongo to celebrate Martyrs’ Day.
“Avoid mass gatherings as these are potential super spreader events. The omicron variant prevalence is now low, and may be mild, but causes severe disease and death for those with underlying risks.”
