Don Wanyama is said to favorite for Vision Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) job ahead of the official announcement by the board as outgoing boss Robert Kabushenga officially leaves the media conglomerate in a few days.

Kabushenga announced he was quitting Vision Group at the end of January after serving for 14 years at the helm of the state-owned media group.

He said he had “for personal reasons” requested the Board “for an early retirement and this has been accepted.”

But Kabushenga would stay for three more months to enable a smooth transition.

The hunt for his successor has dragged on, with several people suggested to be under consideration.

Wanyama, the senior presidential press secretary is said to be favourite among potential Kabushenga successors that include: Vision Group Chief Editor Barbra Kaija, Coca Cola Beverages Africa in Uganda Public Affairs and Communications Director Simon Kaheru, Next Radio general manager Marcus Kwikiriza, and Arinaitwe Rugyendo of Red Pepper.

If he clinches this Vision Group top job, Wanyama will return to newspaper management since he held a media management role at The Daily Monitor where he was managing editor before he left over a controversial political report involving an opinion poll.

He started his newsroom career at New Vision as a sub-editor, crossing to Daily Monitor in 2008 where he served as deputy chief sub-editor, chief sub-editor and managing editor in 2013.

A teacher by training, Wanyama also holds a Master’s of Arts Degree in Journalism and Communication from Makerere University.
