Kilak North MP Anthony Akol has beaten up his Mityana Municipality counterpart Francis Zaake for taking up his seat in the chambers as the House convened to consider the National Coffee Amendment Bill, 2024.
MP Zaake was carried out of the House and driven to hospital. In this piece of legislation, Ugandan MPs are expected to make a decision on whether to place the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) as a department or not.
The MPs are also meeting to discuss President Yoweri Museveni’s proposal seeking to disband Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and Uganda Road Fund (URF) so that their have their functions can be run under the Ministry of Works and Transport.
Although presiding Speaker Anita Among had earlier relied on Rule 9 to announce that the sitting would be free since so many MPs had turned up, MP Zaake accused Akol of taking over his seat. MP Zaake moved to beat Akol who responded with punches, raining them on his face until other legislators intervened to rescue him.

Carried out of the chambers, MP Zaake has been driven in ambulance to a hospital for further attention. This is the second time Zaake has been punched in parliament.
In the first instance, MP Zaake was beaten up by a military general and a Museveni minister. MP Zaake was also a victim of brutality by police officers against whom the US government has since slapped sanctions, as reported Here.
Ahead of the debate on disbanding UCDA, you can read about Uganda’s billionaire companies and how much coffee they sell abroad, Museveni’s argument on why the agency is a parasite, and Bobi Wine’s argument on why Museveni wants to kill the coffee sector Here, There and Over There.
