First lady Janet Kataaha Museveni’s education and sports ministry has spoken out on calls by Uganda to reopen schools the way her neighbors Rwanda and Uganda have done.

While Rwanda and Kenya have reopened their schools and allowed learners to study, Uganda has kept education institutions closed for almost two years.

Reopening for universities and other tertiary institutions is expected sometime in November 2021.

For primary and secondary schools, learners could return to class in January 2022.

Addressing this matter on September 20, education ministry spokesperson Dr Dennis Mugimba compared the school reopening plans of Uganda and those of her neighbors Kenya and Rwanda.

Delving into the figures comparing Uganda with Rwanda and Uganda with Kenya regarding the vaccination drive, Dr Mugimba noted that the only surest way to reopening of school was encouraging vaccination of teachers and non-teaching staff.
