Former police chief Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gen Kale Kayihura is one of the people who sponsored Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s 2017 Kyadondo East by-election campaigns, a critic of the singer-turned-politician’s has alleged.
Bobi Wine won the 2017 Kyadondo by-election under his People Power, a pressure group that later acquired the National Unity Platform (NUP), now the country’s largest opposition political party.
After winning the Kyadondo East parliamentary election, Kyagulanyi rose to national and international prominence, consequently contesting in the 2021 presidential poll in which he emerged second to long-serving and elderly president Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.
In his continued attacks against Bobi Wine and NUP, Sisimuka Uganda founder and CEO Frank Gashumba has claimed that Gen Kayihura was one of Bobi Wine’s sponsors in the by-election that the singer won overwhelmingly.
“I want Bobi Wine to deny this one also. Gen Kale Kayihura, the former IGP, is one of the people who sponsored Bobi Wine’s election by injecting money in the parliamentary byelection. Kayihura and some NRM people had worked with Bobi Wine before he joined politics,” Gashumba told Baba TV.
“I can authoritatively state and tell that Kyagulanyi an NRM Project 100 per cent. I will not insult them, I will keep attacking them with facts.”
Barely a year after the Kyadondo East byelection, President Museveni fired Gen Kayihura, a long-serving police boss, replacing him with his deputy Martins Okoth Ochola.
Kayihura was later arrested, tried in the Court Martial over charges of failure to protect war materials, failure to supervise police officers and abetting kidnap. There have attempts to persuade Museveni to pardon his former ally.
In recent days, Gashumba has attacked Bobi Wine and his NUP party, claiming they work with Museveni. Gashumba, a Munyarwanda by tribe, has also said that nobody can chase Banyarwanda from Uganda, claiming that they are the majority tribe and decide who becomes president. (Read Story HERE).
