VIDEO: Drama in Parliament as MP Accuses Colleague of Using Complicated English Accent

There was drama in Uganda’s Parliament after a member of Parliament accused his colleague of using a complicated accent that he claimed left many legislators, including the speaker, guessing what he is saying.

During July 05 plenary in Kampala, Bubulo East County MP John Musila expressed concern that concerned that Bukonzo West legislator Atkins Kutushabe had made it a habit to uase an English language accent that he thinks is not part of the Queen’s language.

In his argument, Musila said that the accent by Katushabe, which sounds American, was leaving many scratching their heads, trying to understand what he really meant.

He went on to say that Katushabe had been using this same accent in the previous session, and that while he (Musila) had hoped that the legislator from Kasese would change his accent, Katushabe had returned to another session of Parliament with the same way of speaking.

To Musila, if not compelled to change his accent to match the known accents in the country, Katushabe’s accent will affect the work of the House since many MPs, in the Bubulo East lawmaker’s words, are left estimating what he is saying.

In her ruling, Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among (Bukedea District Representative – NRM), who had told MPs to speedily execute parliamentary work, said that Musila’s complaint was simply a commercial break, and that there was no problem with Katushabe’s accent.

Speaker Among claimed that the difference between Musila’s and Katushabe’s accents was the kind of schools that each went to. She then went on with the day’s business.

“Honorable Atkins was speaking English. It’s just because for you you studied in those schools in Manafwa, but he [Katushabe] was speaking English,” Among told Musila.
