Vice president Ssekandi agrees to hold talks with successor after election loss

Vice president Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi says he is ready to hold talks with his Bukoto Central parliamentary successor Richard Ssebamala of the Democratic Party (DP).

Ssebamala trounced VP Ssekandi in the January 14 parliamentary elections, ending the 79-year-old’s legislative career that has spanned over two decades.

Riding on his parliamentary position over these years, Ssekandi has served as deputy speaker of Parliament, speaker, and vice president for 10 years now.

He now says he is willing to work with his successor.

“I will welcome whoever they have brought,” he said in a media interview.

He also revealed he hoped to have time to meet his successor to discuss the constituency’s development agenda.

Ssekandi also defended his quiet character.

“I don’t comment on every issue because am not these usual politicians you know who comment on even things they have less knowledge about,” he said.

It remains to be seen if President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will hand Ssekandi more years as vice president or if he will show him the exit door.
