US Sanctions against Uganda: Biden administration slaps visa restrictions against Museveni security chiefs over Bobi Wine

US government, through President Joe Biden’s secretary of state Antony Blinken, has slapped Visa restrictions against top President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s security chiefs for reportedly undermining democracy and violating human rights of Bobi Wine’s supporters.

The restrictions mean a travel ban for the officials secretary Blinken and the Biden administration believe harrassed opposition supporters.

The US government has relied heavily on Bobi Wine’s complaints, local and International press reports and US Kampala Mission briefs to reach a decision on the sanctions.

Bobi Wine has for months channeled his complaints through sworn imperialist law makers in Congress and the Senate.

His complaints touch on pre and post-election violence, including the November 18 and 19 protests, and disappearance of NUP supporters.

Days before the US sanctions, foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa told the UN security agencies had not kidnapped Bobi Wine’s supporters.

Kutesa insisted security agencies would continue apprehending those suspected to have committed crimes.

Internal affairs minister Gen Jeje Odongo also claimed missing NUP supporters had hidden themselves to tarnish the image of government.

Without mentioning names, secretary Blinken made the following announcement on visa restrictions for Ugandan security officials.

“Today I am announcing visa restrictions on those believed to be responsible for or complicit in undermining the democratic processes in Uganda, including the country’s January 14 general election and the campaign period that preceded it.

“The government of Uganda must significantly improve its record and hold accountable those responsible for the flawed election conduct, violence and intimidation.

The US government will continue to evaluate additional actions against individuals complicit in undermining democracy and human rights in Uganda as well as their immediate family members.”
