UPDATE: Police Clears Air on Reports that 25 People Perished in Lake Victoria Boat Accident

Uganda Police Force (UPF) has spoken out on a boat accident on Lake Victoria after reports claimed that tens of people could have perished in the night accident.

Online reports had claimed that at least 25 people could have died in a boat accident near Kisenyi Landing Site.

But while police has confirmed that the accident indeed happened, it has made it clear to Ugandans that no person died as reported.

UPF says officers from the Uganda Police Marines unit responded to a boating incident that occurred at Kisenyi Landing Site.

That the incident involved a boat which first dropped off some people at Lukuba Landing Site at around 8pm.

But as the boat headed to Kisaba Landing Site on Lake Victoria, it got involved in an accident after its engines “got entangled in fishing nets, causing one to fall into the water.”

“The boat was then hit by strong winds up to the mainland near Lukuba,” Police further said.

On the fate of the people aboard the boat, police says nine people who were on the boat “all got off safely.”

“It should be remembered that transport boats are not allowed to move at night,” the law and order enforcement agency said.

“Therefore, we shall prefer charges against the boat owner when we receive all the facts.”
