UPDATE: Katonga Bridge Re-Opened (See What Vehicle Categories Will Be Allowed to Use it)

Uganda National Roads Authority (Unra) has reopened Katonga Bridge for some vehicles as reconstruction works continue.

Following the heavy rains which washed away part of the Katonga Bridge on the Kampala-Masaka Road, the use of the bridge was stopped for safety reasons and to also allow efforts to reinstate the bridge.

Now, Unra has announced that the bridge shall be used for light traffic.

The roads agency made it clear that the bridge will strictly be used for motorbikes, saloon cars, station wagons/SUVs, 14-seater (taxi) vans and 28-seater (coaster) vans.

“Any vehicles not included in the above category shall not be allowed to cross the bridge. Therefore, buses and lorries, or trucks of any type are prohibited from using the bridge until further notice,” warned Unra.

“Further structural integrity assessments shall be carried out to determine the use of the bridge by heavier vehicles. Other interventions will continue with the objective of reinstating the road to its full use in the shortest time possible.”

Bridge users have also been told to expect delays and to respect traffic guidelines.

“The bridge shall be a one-lane access and therefore travelers should expect some delays,” Unra noted. Drivers are required to strictly follow the guidelines of the Traffic Officers, the signs, and the markings on the road for safety and to avoid delays.”
