The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (Mofped) has reportedly released funds meant for the payment of enhanced allowances for striking medical interns.
Intern doctors have been on strike since early November 2021.
On December 10, the health ministry fired the medical interns and ordered them to vacate hospital premises within one week.
But the director general of health services, Dr Henry Mwebesa has since rescinded the decision to fire the interns in a dramatic u-turn.
During today’s parliamentary plenary, information minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi confirmed Dr Mwebesa would be meeting interns.
Also, state minister for finance, planning and economic development, Henry Musasizi, revealed that the ministry had received a request from the Ministry of Health (MoH) in which the Wandegeya-based ministry was asking for funds to pay interns allowances.
Minister Musasizi said he hoped the Ministry of Health would receive the money by close of business today.
Once the funds have been received by MoH the next step would be to compile authentic lists of all medical interns who should be paid.
