UPDATE: Besigye Makes Big Announcement; Addresses Kasangati Residents, Blocked from Proceeding to Kampala

Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has announced that he will not rest until government has swung in action to reduce commodity prices, and stopped a planned succession from President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni to his son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Addressing reporters at his Kasangati home this morning, Besigye rallied Ugandans to join protests calling on government to address the high prices of commodities; to reject a Museveni-Muhoozi succession; and call for a transition from the ‘military junta’ to civilian rule.

He broke into song as he rallied Ugandans to unite and save themselves from the hard economic and political situation.

Besigye made it clear that the protests were not part of his presidential election campaign but meant for all Ugandans to unite and rescue themselves.

Last Thursday, Dr Besigye and his fellow protesters were blocked from walking to town, with police and other agencies fearing that the four-time presidential candidate could resurrect his walk-to-work protests that shook President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government in 2011.

Besigye was protesting government’s failure to address the issue of high commodity prices, the same matter that sparked off the 2011 walk-to-work protests. The other big issue that Besigye and his People’s Front for Transition (PFT Red Card Front) want addressed is the alleged plot to have first son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba succeed his father Gen Museveni.

The PFT has made it clear that it will rally Ugandans to oppose any plans for a Museveni-Muhoozi succession, and push for a transition that empowers the citizens and disempowers the ‘gunmen.’

Besigye was placed under house arrest until May 17 night when security operatives left his home, but deployed heavily in the Kasangati area.

After addressing reporters on May 19 morning, Besigye drove out of his home and managed to address some residents of Kasangati but was blocked from proceeding to the Kampala City Center to address more Ugandans.

The military and police then dispersed his supporters.
