Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango was man of the match as he saved five penalties from Cape Town City in the MTN8 Final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday.
It was these penalty saves that helped Sundowns win the MTN8 for the first time since 2007.
Also, this was Mamelodi Sundowns first appearance in MTN8 Final since Bidvest Wits beat them 3-0 at the Mbombela Stadium in 2016.
The Mamelodi Sundowns vs Cape Town City game had ended 1-1 after extra time.
The goals had come from Thapelo Morena in the 24th minute and Fagrie Lakay in the 75th minute.
Time for spot kicks and Onyango left the world talking when he saved Khanyisa Mayo’s, Lakay’s, Abdul Jeleel Ajagun’s, Tareeq Fielies and Thamsanqa Mkhize’s penalties.
The Ugandan’s performance reminded football enthusiasts of 2015 when Onyango saved two spot kicks against Kaizer Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout Cup final that Sundowns won 3-1.
Former Lions coach and Titans assistant coach Geoffrey Toyana, a vocal Sundowns supporter, sent a cryptic tweet before the game about Onyango’s ability.
