A diplomat representing President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government as a High Commissioner has died in a hospital in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. Dr Hassan Wasswa Galiwango was until Monday, January 16, 2023, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya and Seychelles.
Uganda’s foreign affairs ministry confirmed Galiwango’s demise. “It is with Great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Amb. (Dr) Hassan Wasswa Galiwango who has been serving as Uganda High Commissioner to Kenya, Seychelles and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Program and UN HABITAT. He passed on this morning, January 16, 2023 at 7:30am at Nairobi Hospital where he has been undergoing treatment,” a statement by acting Foreign Affairs Ministry Permanent Secretary Amb. Charles Ssentongo read.
“Amb. (Dr) Hassan Wasswa Gallwango was appointed by His Excellency the President as High Commissioner on June 16, 2021 and posted to Uganda High Commission, Nairobi where he has been serving at the time of his untimely death. Burial arrangement will be communicated in the due course. May His soul rest in eternal peace.”
Galiwango previously served as Museveni’s NRM party’s Director Finance and Administration. He was pronounced dead at the Nairobi Hospital. Many groups and people have been paying tribute to Ambassador Galiwango, who was husband to MP Connie Galiwango Nakayenze.
“The youth league is saddened by the news of the demise of our mentor Dr Hassan Wasswa Galiwango, he has been our former Director Finance and Administration at plot 10 and has been currently the ambassador of Uganda to Kenya,” the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), to which he belonged, wrote in its tribute.
“Dr Hassan Wasswa Galiwango thank you for educating me. Thank you for being a father. Thank you for impacting on the lives of many. Thank you for being one of the greatest teachers of African history. Rest well our giant,” wrote Parliament’s spokesperson Chris Obore.
