Ugandans are behind you: Muntu challenges EC to be bold, make history in 2021

The Electoral Commission (EC) has nominated former army commander Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu as a 2021 presidential candidate.

Muntu, a former president of main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), is the flag bearer of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT).

He joined other former bush war generals, incumbent Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), and former security minister Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Tumukunde Kakurugu.

After his nomination, Muntu encouraged the EC to be courageous in their declaration of election results that reflect the will of the people.

Most of Uganda’s presidential election results have been challenged in courts of law.

But Muntu challenged the EC to be fair and transparent, assuring the Byabakama-led commission of Ugandans’ support.

“We desire to see that as people because we have never seen any election that is conducted in a manner where all who engage in it, the winners and losers, do trust the outcomes of it. Therefore, it is a challenge for the Commission,” Muntu noted.

“I know that the country will back you up to do all things that are in your means, to be independent, to boldly and without fear for anybody. Don’t fear, do what is necessary. Conduct a free, fair transparent process. You have a choice to make.

“My hope is that the remaining two or three months of elections will be managed well and smoothly so that we can have a free, fair and transparent electoral process.”

The ANT flag bearer also told doubters they would be shocked.

“What I am sure of today as we speak, I believe that we are starting a new chapter in this country. I believe that a new era is starting,” he said.

“Those who know, known. Those who don’t know, don’t know. They will get to know with time but today is a day of victory.”
