UCE 2024: Uneb Announces Dates, Guidelines for Special Exams for S4 Repeaters as Old Curriculum Ends

Assessment body Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) has taken the decision to conduct transitional UCE 2024 examinations for O-level or S4 repeaters and is preparing to administer the papers as the country switches from the old to the new secondary schools curriculum.

This means that Uneb will conduct two sets of Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams this year (2024): the transitional UCE 2024 examinations and the October-November 2024 UCE examinations for the first cohort of students under the new curriculum.

In a circular dated February 01, 2024 on the selection of centres for the 2024 transitional examination for the Uganda Certificate of Education, Uneb Executive Director and secretary Dan N Odongo confirmed that the board “will administer the UCE examination based on the New Curriculum for the first time in October/November 2024.”

Odongo added: “The Board realizes the need to conduct a transitional UCE examination in June/July 2024 based on the Old Curriculum.”

WHO ELSE APART FROM S4 LEAVERS?

At least three categories of candidates will be legible to register for the UCE 2024 transitional examinations. These include the candidates who registered for, but missed, the 2023 UCE examinations, those who sat the 2023 UCE examination but did not obtain the grades they had wished to attain, and would wish to repeat the examination as well as adult learners that wish to sit the UCE examination under the old curriculum.

Odongo has now told District Education Officers (DEOs) and Uneb area supervisors to choose centres where the special UCE 2024 transitional examinations will be conducted. The Uneb secretary and ED also guided on what should be followed in choosing a centre.

“In an effort to administer this examination efficiently, Uneb has proposed that candidates for June/July 2024 UCE should sit in the existing Uneb halls. Where candidates are many in a district, another school that is located in an area with the greatest number of schools (which should be located away from the hall) should be identified,” wrote Odongo.

“The purpose of this communication is to request the District Education Officers to liaise with the Uneb area supervisors in each district to identify two suitable centres to accommodate the proposed June/July UCE examination. The identified centres will be the only ones whose portals shall be open to register the June/July 2024 UCE candidates.”

Odongo also instructed DEOs and Uneb area supervisors to ensure that they have forwarded the names and other information on selected centres via email by February 19, 2024 “to enable the registration to start.”

NEW LOWER SECONDARY CURRICULUM (NLSC) ASSESSMENT

Uneb recently held its first stakeholder engagements as part of preparations for Competency Based Assessment (CBA) for the NLSC.

At the board’s Kyambogo office, Uneb engaged local government officials, including about 200 DEOs, MEOs, CEOs and Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) on the assessment under NLSC.

Meanwhile, UCE 2023 candidates, teachers, parents and guardians are complaining over the delayed release of results. Uneb has spoken out on UCE 2023 Results Release Date following reports. (Read Story Here).
