Tycoon Aponye Wife Reveals Husband’s Last Words in ‘Final Phone Call’ Before Nasty Accident

The wife (now widow) of tycoon Apollo Nyegamehe aka Aponye has revealed the last words she shared with her husband before he got involved in an accident that claimed his life.

Aponye perished in an accident at Itojo Ntungamo on Mbarara-Kabale Road on the night of Thursday, July 06, 2023, as he headed to Rukiga District. Aponye’s SUV Land Cruiser registration number UBF 300Z hit a stationary truck.

The tycoon died on spot while the other occupants sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for medical attention.

On Sunday, July 09, a vigil was held at Aponye’s home in Lubowa off Entebbe Road. Businessmen and politicians thronged the fallen tycoon’s residence to condole with the family. These included Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, former Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Nobert Mao, former deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana, and city tycoon  Omar Mandela, among others.

Evangelist (Vangi) Nyegamehe, Aponye’s widow, revealed the contents of the last phone call she had with her husband before she received the shocking news of his death.

Among others, Vangi had wished Aponye safe travel, and he replied with confidence that he would reach her safely. But this was never to be.

“We were on phone as he approached Itojo, the point of the accident. I told him ‘please travel safely’ and he replied they would go well. Then the phone went dead. I called again shortly but it was busy. I called again it was busy,” narrated Evangelist.

She added that she was later informed that her husband had been involved in an accident and had not made it.  

Aponye married Vangi in 1978. Beginning as a wheelbarrow pusher in Kabale town, Aponye worked hard to build a business empire and died a billionaire.
