TROUBLE in Museveni’s NRM as Its Gogonyo Candidate Orone’s Academic Papers are Challenged

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has suffered a setback after a voter in Gogonyo Constituency challenged its candidate Derrick Orone’s academic papers. 

Through Zahura and Company Advocates, a voter named Ausi Njaye Byantallo has petitioned Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama challenging the ‘irregular/unlawful nomination of Orone Derrick as a candidate in the parliamentary byelection for Gogonyo Constituency.

A voter at Polling Station 02 Gogonyo LC Court, Njaye says Orone’s nomination flouted electoral laws.

Njaye is challenging the documents that Orone presented for nomination.

“The irregularity / illegal nomination of the above candidate is based on the fact that Article 80(1) (c) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda 1995 and section 4 (1) (c) of the Parliamentary Elections Act 2005 were glaringly offended as the said candidate was nominated based on a purported letter of verification of results form from Uganda National Examinations Board,” reads Njaye’s petition in part.

“My Lord, our client has further informed us that upon the nomination of the above candidate, he proceeded under Section 15 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, 2005, and inspected the nomination papers of the above candidate and to his dismay and surprise, he discovered that the said candidate was nominated based on a mere photocopy of a letter instead of the required Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education or its equivalent as provided by the above legal regimes.”

Njaye’s petition has since been received by the Electoral Commission. It is not clear when the EC will respond to this aggrieved voter.

Meanwhile, there is still confusion on the candidature of the FDC-NUP joint candidate Joseph Okoboi Opolot after the National Unity Platform (NUP) refused to withdraw him from the race.
