TREASON: Ssegirinya Spends Night in Kireka

Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya spent yet another night in detention, this time at the Special Investigations Division in Kireka.

On September 27 evening, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed that Ssegirinya had been re-arrested shortly after his release from Kigo Prison.

A Toyota Hiace (drone) drove Ssegirinya from Kigo.

The Kawempe North MP faces fresh charges, including treason, said Enanga.

“We want to inform the public that Hon Ssegirinya Mohammad has also been rearrested on fresh charges of treason and incitement to violence by the joint security task team of investigators,” added Enanga.

“He has been transferred to the Special Investigations Division, in Kireka for further statement recording and action.”

Last week, High Court in Masaka granted Ssegirinya and his Makindye West counterpart Allan Ssewanyana bail.

But Ssegirinya kept in detention because Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake, one of his sureties, had travelled abroad without signing the requisite papers.

On September 27 during a court session at the High Court in Kololo, FDC Vice President and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago sought to substitute Zaake with Ntenjeru South MP Patrick Nsanja.

Presiding Judge Lillian Alum Omara granted the request by Lukwago, the lawyer for both Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana.

“I implore you to ask the government to respect that law this time and not to re-arrest Ssegirinya like they did Honourable Ssewanyana,” Lukwago further asked Justice Alum.

The judge would order Ssegirinya’s release but the MP was re-arrested, just like was Ssewanyana last week.

“Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya has been abducted by security operatives, shortly after being granted bail by court today,” said NUP in a statement.

Later, Enanga confirmed the arrest.
