Three Kampala people die of Covid19 as city records 72 new cases in single day

Uganda has registered three Covid19 deaths and 94 new infections, the Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced.

The Covid19 death and infection tolls are the highest in a single day since the country registered her first case on March 21.

The new figures now put the cumulative infection toll at 1,750 and number of deaths at 19.

All the three deaths are from Kampala. They are two males aged 45 years and 31 years and a 57-year-old female.

They were pronounced dead at three private health facilities in Kampala.

Also, 72 of the new from Kampala — now the country’s Covid19 hotspot.

According to results from tests done on August 19, the new cases include 53 alerts, 33 contacts, seven truck drivers and one returnee from Kenya.

Of the 53 alerts, 51 are from Kampala, one from Wakiso and another from Buvuma.

The 33 contacts to previously confirmed cases include 21 people from Kampala, six from Nakaseke, three from Wakiso, two from Adjumani and one from Koboko.

The seven truck drivers arrived into the country via Busia, Lia and Elegu border points.

MoH has warned city dwellers against complacence.

“In light of the spike in new cases in Kampala Metropolitan Area, it is evident that the rate of community transmission is high. The public is STRONGLY advised to take personal responsibility to avoid contracting Covid19. The earlier we change our attitude and behaviour towards Covid19, the better for our health and nation,” appealed MoH.

“The Ministry appeals to the population including users of public transport to wear a face mask at all time, and wear it properly – ensure the nose, mouth and chin are fully covered, practice good hand hygiene and maintain a social distance whenever in public. Covid19 is dangerous, spreads fast and it kills both the young and the elderly alike as statistics both locally and globally have shown.”
