THE POLICE CHIEF’S HEALTH CONDITION: Police Breaks Silence on Rumors That IGP Ochola Has Been Flown Abroad for Treatment

Uganda Police Force (UPF) has spoken out on reports that its chief IGP John Martins Okoth Ochola has been flown out of the country for specialized treatment.

On July 12, 2023, government newspaper The New Vision reported that the country’s police chief was rushed out of the country alongside the police surgeon and his (IGP’s) personal assistant.

But police spokesperson Fred Enanga has spoken out on the rumors of the IGP’s alleged hospitalization.

Enanga has told members of the public “to disregard the rumors and misinformation, perpetrated by The New Vision Newspaper of Wednesday, 12th July, 2023, that the IGP, Mr. John Martin Okoth Ochola, is unwell and reportedly flown out of the country for Medicare in accompaniment of the Police Surgeon and his Personal Assistant.

Although Enanga said that the story on Ochola’s hospitalization was “false and misleading,” he confirmed that the police chief had undergone an eye checkup at Argawal Hospital along Lumumba Avenue.

The IGP was advised to stay away from work for a week.

“He was examined, treated and advised to take seven days rest at home. He is reachable physically and on phone,” said Enanga.

He also announced that UPF was mulling over a lawsuit against the government-owned daily.

“The Director Legal and Human Rights Services, has taken up the matter and will take legal action against the Media house for giving false and misleading information to the public,” the police publicist noted.

In recent weeks, there have been rumors of top government officials like the Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo and ex-Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi being flown out of the country for treatment. But some of the reports have been dismissed. (See Details Here and There).

In September 2021, police confirmed that IGP Ochola was sick, and that stress had worsened his health condition. (Read Story Here).
