Stop acting like Idi Amin Army Goons: Andrew Mwenda Blasts CMI over Victoria University VC Muganga’s Arrest

Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda, who has worked with both President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni of Uganda and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame, has castigated UPDF’s Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) over the manner in which Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr Lawrence Muganga was arrested.

Suspected CMI operatives arrested VC Dr Muganga on September 02.

A video shared by witnesses at the scene of Dr Muganga’s arrest shows security operatives besieging the Victoria University vice chancellor and beckoning him to a waiting van.

This video had prompted conclusions that Dr Muganga had been kidnapped.

Now, Mwenda says security agencies should have summoned Dr Muganga to police instead of ‘kidnapping’ him in a ‘drone.’

“Why do Ugandan security agencies use methods last employed by Idi Amin’s goons to arrest people? Couldn’t they have invited Lawrance Muganga, the vice chancellor of Victoria University, to police for questioning and then detain him? What is so hard with acting civilized?” asked Mwenda.

“This is the more disturbing because only a few weeks ago, President Yoweri Museveni went on television to speak against these forms of barbaric arrests, actually abductions. Was the president merely pretending or do these security agents not listen to him anymore?”

He went to suggest what Uganda and Rwanda can do to end the bad blood between the two brotherly countries.

“For all the talk about the necessity of East African integration, one wonders why Kampala finds it difficult to make some diplomatic reproachment with Kigali, a factor that would cool nerves and end the incessant internal fight against Ugandans of Banyarwanda culture!”
