Ruling NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) has announced that the party’s candidates for speaker and deputy speaker race will be chosen through a vetting process by the Electoral Commission (EC), and a decision endorsed by the parliamentary caucus.

Meeting at State House Entebbe on Monday, May 17, the NRM CEC resolved that MPs interested in the speaker and deputy speaker positions pick expression of interest forms from the NRM Electoral Commission (EC) starting today, Tuesday, May 18.

This resolution is exactly what NRM party’s Twitter administrator posted weeks ago, irking party EC chairperson Dr Fred Tanga Odoi.

So, what happens next? The NRM EC is expected to forward names of vetted speaker and deputy speaker aspirants to NRM CEC on May 22.

CEC will convene to pick preferred candidates on the same day.

The top organ of the ruling party will then present the two names, preferred speaker and preferred deputy speaker, to the parliamentary caucus on May 23.

Voting for speaker and deputy speaker will happen on May 24 at the Kololo Independence Grounds.

Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo will preside over the election of speaker and deputy speaker.
