State House insists Museveni is neither sick nor dead as president’s rare public appearances are explained

State House has explained why Uganda’s 76-year-old President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni rarely appears in public, insisting the country’s longest serving leader is neither sick nor dead.

When reports of Museveni’s sickness (and or death) spread like fire over a week ago, State House quickly cleared the air on the matter.

Later, the president made a public appearance, putting to rest doubts about his health condition.

Yet doubts about his health condition has persisted.

Now, State House has explained the president’s rare public appearances.

Senior presidential secretary touched on Museveni’s most recent public appearance, detailing why the head-of-state didn’t get out of his car to physically interact with supporters.

On July 07, Museveni waved at residents of Bwaise, Kawempe, Kagoma, and Matugga who had lined the streets to see and greet him.

Museveni and Kenyan deputy president William Ruto were in Matugga to lay a foundation stone for the construction of a multibillion Biological Drugs and mRNA Vaccine Manufacturing Facility.

“As they made their way, the crowds surged towards his convoy to wave to him and confirm his presence in the car. The President waved back but did not get out of his car or even stop,” said State House in a statement.

Nabusayi also confirmed Museveni had reduced on his public appearances due to the Covid19 second wave.

“The President announced a total lockdown and therefore cut down on his public engagements. Most of his work has been through virtual meetings, radio and televisions,” noted Nabusayi.

Describing those spreading fake news on the president’s health as ‘criminals,’ Nabusayi urged telecommunications regulator Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to probe the spate of fake news on government officials’ health.

“Those creating unnecessary fear and panic among the public by spreading fake news are criminals intent on causing havoc,” said Nabusayi.

“UCC should investigate social media abuse and take action.”

For the record, Nabusayi said Museveni was in good health and would speak at a virtual event July 08.

“He is safe and carrying on his duties scientifically. Please don’t believe everything you see or read on social media,” the statement further read.

“Tomorrow, virtually, he will be officially opening the commemoration of the African Integration Day in his capacity as the President of Uganda and Champion of Regional Integration in Africa among other meetings.”
