Stand warned: US secretary of state Pompeo puts Museveni on notice over 2021 elections

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo on December 10 said the Donald Trump Administration was closely monitoring the situation in Uganda about one month to next year’s elections.

Secretary Pompeo’s warning can as the world marked International Human Rights Day and the International Anti-Corruption Day.

In total, the US and UK have imposed sanctions on 37 corrupt actors and human rights abusers.

Pompeo told the Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni administration “obligations to hold free and fair elections.”

He added that the US would sanction individual officers working to obstruct democracy.

“The United States is a longstanding partner of Uganda. We expect our partners to live up to their obligations to hold free and fair elections,” wrote Pompeo.

“We are paying close attention to the actions of individuals who seek to impede the ongoing democratic process.”

Back home, Trump of the Republican Party continues to fight to stay in office. He accuses his rival Joe Biden of the Democratic Party for rigging the November 03 election.

The concerns stem from continued blocking of opposition campaign meetings over Covid19 prevention guidelines.

When such meeting were blocked and two presidential candidates Patrick Oboi Amuriat of main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP) arrested, protests broke out, resulting in the death of 54 people.
