Over the Weekend, Jinja based Walukuba Barbarians left the Kings Park Arena with a bleeding nose after being thumped by the Stanbic Black Pirates.
The fervently contested week 7 bout ended 29: 21 in favour of the incredible sea robbers who made good use of the first half where most tries were bagged, not forgetting the precious home advantage.
Immersed with endless tackles and scrums, Marvin Odong, the head coach for Stanbic Black Pirates, described the game as a well fought session that managed to bring another win home.
Odong said that although the performance is not the best his team would give, he is optimistic because it’s good enough to make the next opponent tremble. The Stanbic Black Pirates will be facing off with Toyota Buffaloes on Saturday March 23, 2024 at 04:00PM.
“I’m happy we got a win. It’s good for us but as a coach, I think we still have a lot more to do on the pitch. We have a number of things that we need to improve especially making sure that all the 16 men are firing. Surely we shall be more dangerous than we have been today,” said Odong, adding that they are not worried about the coming matches because the zeal and commitment of sailing to the top keeps rising each and every day.
Umar Balikanda, the match referee from Uganda Rugby Union, described the faceoff as a good, tight and well contested game.
“I love the fact that all the teams came in, they all wanted to win this game. I have a feeling it’s one of these games, where one makes a mistake, the other team utilizes it,” said Balikanda.
“Both teams need to do better so they can lower the number of penalties coming from minor mistakes like collapsing a scrum, offside among others which easily be handled by the coaches.”
The Black Pirates are a big family to include the Sailors who play in the division league and The Black Pearls who are our sister club and participates in the Women’s league that happens every year.
The Black Pirates are the winners of the Bell Uganda Cup 2007, Uganda Cup 2016 and 2017, a trebble year taking The Nile Premier League, Guiness 7’s and Makerere 10’s.
