Masaka High Court Victoria Katamba Nakintu has granted bail to Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana of Makindye West, both belonging to Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP).
About two weeks ago, Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana were remanded to Kigo Government Prison by Masaka Court Magistrate Charles Yeteise over charges of murder and attempted murder related to their alleged involvement in a recent spate of killings in Greater Masaka Area.
Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya face four counts, three of murder and one of attempted murder, over their alleged involvement in a spate of killings that have claimed nearly 30 lives in Greater Masaka Area in recent months.
On September 06, the MPs appeared before Masaka Police for questioning.
During a September 07 court session presided over by Chief Magistrate Yeteise, prosecution led by Richard Birivumbuka claimed that Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana held meetings at Happy Boys, Kalenda, and Kayanja Rest House in Kampala to plan Masaka killings.
Prosecution further alleged that on August 23, 2021, while at Ssetala Village in Kimanya Kabonera Division, the two MPs participated in the murder of Sulaiman Kakooza, Michael Kiza Nswa, and Tadeo Kiyimba, and the attempted murder of Robert Ssebyato.
But on September 20, the MPs’ lawyers led by FDC Vice President and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago convinced Justice Victoria Nakintu Katamba of the urgency of releasing Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana on a number of grounds, including the need for them to seek specialized medical care, and the argument that the people of Kawempe North and Makindye West should not be denied their right to representation.
