SPEAKING IN TONGUES: Shock as Vocal Ugandan Balokole Pastor Trashes Law against Homosexuals

In what is being seen by some as something similar to the biblical Saul-Paul conversion, a leading Ugandan Pentecostal pastor who was previously known for his vehement criticism of the LGBTQI community has made some sort of U-turn and rubbished the country’s newly assented to Anti-Homosexuality Act.

Famous for his allegations against some prominent city pastors whom he accused of sodomizing young boys and men, Pastor Solomon Male, the lead minister at Arising for Christ Ministries, now says that the Anti-Homosexuality Act was not necessary and that President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni should never have given it his nod.

Pastor Male calls himself the leading Anti-Homosexuality crusader but he is now of the view that the new piece of legislation will make the work of anti-gay activists and religious leaders difficult. In an interview with The Daily Monitor, Male also predicted that the Anti-Homosexuality Act was going to be difficult to enforce or implement.

In any case, Pastor Male continued, the new Act of Parliament does not add anything significantly new to already existing laws, meaning that existing pieces of legislation were sufficient for the war against homosexuality.

He went on to explain the trouble with the Anti-Homosexuality Act, saying it constituted violations on right to privacy and others as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. He categorically argued that the law has defined the kind of person it targets, meaning that lawmakers legislated for the discrimination of a certain group of people because of their sexual orientation.

He insisted that the country did not lack laws to deal with vices but lacked a functional system that would uses pieces of legislation to deliver justice.

Pastor Male’s views are stark contrast with those of a number of religious leaders such as Anglican Church of Uganda (CoU) Archbishop Steven Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu who have welcomed the presidential assent to the Anti-Homosexuality Act. Archbishop Kaziimba is on record for leading the Anglican Church of Uganda in breaking away from the Canterbury after the Church of England okayed same-sex weddings. (See Details Here).

After President Museveni signed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law, US President Joe Biden issued a clear warning, detailing what the US Government will do to the Ugandan president and its citizens for supporting the new law. Already, the US government has cancelled Speaker of Parliament Anita Among’s visa over the anti-gay law. (Read Stories Here and There).
