Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament Anita Annet Among has trashed a tweet in which some unscrupulous people had made it appear like she had told off Ugandans criticizing her and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa for acquiring two ceremonial Benz cars at a cost of about Shs2.8bn.
With the Ugandans shouldering high commodity prices and a rising cost of living, most people have criticized Among (Bukedea District Woman MP, NRM) and Tayebwa (Ruhinda North, NRM) of being inconsiderate.
It has also emerged that the procurement process for these vehicles began sometime in October 2021 when Among was deputy speaker, Jacob L’Okori Oulanyah (RIP) Speaker and Tayebwa Government Chief Whip.
With Oulanyah’s demise in March 2022, Among was elevated to the Speaker position while Tayebwa became her deputy. The vehicles, whose procurement began when Oulanyah was still alive, are supposed to belong to Parliament and not the individual speakers.
With Parliament largely ignoring the reports regarding the cost and procurement process for these vehicles, some unscrupulous have put words in Among’s mouth. They fabricated a tweet, and shared it online, appearing as if it had been issued by the speaker.
The fabricated tweet that put words into Among’s mouth read as follows: “In addition, I’ve seen members of cabinet, MPs and Ugandans lamenting about my new car. If you want one, you run for speaker! We bought that car to make Uganda’s parliament the best in East Africa. We will look into prices later, but for now let my Benz be, haters!”
But Among has since made it clear that the tweet is fake. “Kindly ignore the fake, malicious and forged tweet making rounds on social media, created by ill-intentioned people,” she tweeted.
Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Commission, which Among chairs, has increased MPs allowances. (Read Story Here).
