Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) says it lawfully nominated and declared Muhammad Ssegirinya Kawempe North MP-elect.
Currently detained at Kitalya Prison for inciting violence, Ssegirinya’s election is being challenged in court.
His rival Sulaiman Kidandala alleges that the MP-elect used forged academic papers for his nomination.
Assessment body Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) agrees with Kidandala on the suspicion regarding Ssegirinya’s papers.
But in its defence in Kidandala’s suit, the EC says it followed all electoral laws regarding the nomination, election, declaration and gazetting of Ssegirinya as MP-elect.
The commission further noted that Ssegirinya presented the requisite academic documents, and a deed poll to back his change of name from Richard to Muhammad.
“The nomination, Election and gazetting of Ssegirinya by the Electoral Commission as MP Kawempe North Constituency in Kampala was done in accordance with the law having found him possessing the minimum qualification of Advanced Level and duly registered as a voter and fulfilment of other nomination requirements,” said Kampala Electoral District returning officer Barbra Mulimira.
Mulimira asked court to throw out Kidandala’s election petition.
