There was shock at a muzigo in Bulwa Zone in Wakaliga as Red Cross and KCCA leaders headed by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago picked the body of a man suspected to have died of Covid19 two days ago.

A postmortem report ascertaining the man’s cause of death is expected soon.

Uganda’s Covid19 cases and deaths have increased in recent weeks, with tens dying on a daily basis this week.

On June 18, President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni announced a total lockdown for the next 42 days.

Lukwago said KCCA had partnered with Uganda Red Cross Society “to provide emergency services, particularly evacuation of the suspected COVID-19 cases and dead bodies and those suffering from other ailments.”

The Lord Mayor castigated Kampala City Resident Commissioner (RCC) Hudu Hussein for failure to provide emergency evacuation services

“We made frantic calls to the RCC of Kampala Mr. Hudu Hussein, who heads the COVID-19 task force for Kampala and the metropolitan area, the police and other relevant authorities but in vain,” noted Lukwago.

“We had to improvise means with the Red cross to handle the situation.”

The Lord Mayor also talked of plans to increase the number of emergency ambulances.

“We have also reached out to other private agencies and health facilities who have graciously accepted to boost our fleet of ambulances,” he said.

“Currently, KCCA has got five Ambulances, two of which are dysfunctional. With the support of good Samaritans we are likely to pool about 18 ambulances to deal with the pathetic situation.”
