Shock as Ugandan MP Collapses in Parliament

There was panic and drama inside Uganda’s Parliament on Thursday, September 29, as a Member of the House collapsed during a special session to elect the country’s representatives to regional Parliament, the East African Legislative Assembly (Eala).

In a session chaired by Speaker and Bukedea District Woman MP Anita Annet Among, candidates were giving their campaign addresses to Parliament.

Days ago, the candidates were nominated to represent Uganda in  the Arusha-based Parliament.

Independent Eala candidates kicked off the address to Parliament. These included: Jacquiline Amongin, Dennis Kapyata, Daniel Muwonge Mugwanya, Stella Kiryowa, Phiona Rwandarugali, Patience Naamara Tumwesigye, and Lauben Bwengye Muhangi.

Others who have already made their submissions included Mohamed Kateregga of Justice Forum (Jeema).

Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Democratic Party (DP), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have all fronted candidates, with the latter returning all the incumbent MPs. (Read Story Here).

MPs of Uganda’s 11th Parliament are expected to vote for nine representatives to Eala. Voting and declaration of results of successful candidates will be presided over by Speaker Among at Parliament.

Meanwhile, as candidates outlined their priority areas if elected, Bukimbiri County MP Eddie Kwizera, who was recently reelected, collapsed.

It was not clear why Kwizera collapsed. But his colleagues lifted him to the parliamentary ambulance which rushed him to hospital for medical attention.

This is not the first time a member of Parliament is collapsing in Parliament. A few months ago, Deputy Prime Minister and MP Moses Ali collapsed in Parliament. (Read Story and Watch Video Here).

Moses Ali also appeared to be uneasily shifting in his chair during an event at Kololo, raising concerns over the health of the elderly cabinet minister. (Read Story Here).
