Senior police officers visit Katikkiro Mayiga over Mbogo clan meeting disruption

Uganda Police Force (UPF) chief political commissar AIGP Asan Kasingye has led a delegation of senior officers to deliver IGP Martins Okoth Ochola’s apologies over the disruption of a Mbogo clan meeting in Mityana.

The weekend event has raised outrage among Buganda Kingdom loyalists and the church.

Members of the Mbogo clan had gathered to thank God for the milestones achieved by their clan head Gajuule Kasibante in the service of the Kingdom.

Their meeting was at the clan’s ancestral ground at Mugulu in Ziggoti Town Council in Singo in a thanksgiving service for their clan head, Gajuule Kasibante.

But tear gas disrupted the thanksgiving service that retired Masaka Diocese Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa was leading.

While the participants say that police had besieged the meeting place, teargassed and ordered them to go home, declaring their meeting illegal, local police officials claimed the tear gas had been fired at a nearby place to disperse rowdy youths but had been carried by the wind to the clan meeting’s venue.

On October 20, IGP Ochola sent Kasingye and other officials to meet Bishop Emeritus Kaggwa at his Masaka residence where they delivered the force’s apologies.

A day later, Kasingye headed to Mayiga’s office in Bulange Mengo in Kampala “to brief him on what happened in Mugulu Ssingo during the thanksgiving ceremony of Omutaka Gajule Kayira Kasibante, the head of the Mbogo Clan, and also to apologise to him, the people of Buganda and members of the Mbogo Clan for the operational lapse and disruption of the ceremony by the territorial police.”

After the meeting, UPF said “the Katikkiro was more appreciative, and the team promised a stronger cooperation between the Buganda Kingdom and the Uganda Police Force.”

But Mayiga “called for disciplinary action against the commander that disrupted the clan function,” a stance he has maintained since the incident stole headlines.
