SCHOOL REOPENING: Senior One Students to be Promoted to Next Class, Remaining Study Material Pushed to S2

The Ministry of Education and Sports has proposed that Senior One (S1) students be promoted to Senior Two (S2) despite not completing the mandatory curriculum content for that class.

Closure of schools over the Covid19 pandemic has left education ministry officials scratching their heads over what to do since reopening schools would present a dilemma, including having two batches in Senior One.

The results of candidates who passed the 2020 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) were released months ago and these learners are expected to move on to the next level of education, secondary, and Senior One.

But the Senior One class which came from the 2019 PLE batch is still in the same class and has not even studied for two months.

On reopening of schools, the dilemma would be having two batches in the same class.

According to sources that attended last week’s meeting on reopening of schools, Senior One content will be carried over to Senior Two.

Upon reporting back to school, learners who were in Senior One will report to Senior Two to pave way for the batch that passed 2020 PLE.

The National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) is working around the clock to ensure harmonization of topics so that a condensed curriculum will leave teachers and learners with less load.

Reopening of primary and secondary schools is expected next year.

But universities and other tertiary institutions could reopen their gates sometime in November.
