The Ministry of Education and Sports has released reporting dates for schools in the districts of Kampala, Mukono, Wakiso and Mpigi ahead of official reopening of education institutions.
Ugandan schools officially reopen on January 10, 2022.
But due to the fact that reporting dates come with huge numbers using public and private transport, which could become a super spreader for Covid19, the ministries of education, transport and health have recommended a staggered manner of reporting for the four districts.
Kampala, Mukono, Wakiso and Mpigi have a big number of schools. Allowing learners from all these institutions to report on the same date would cause traffic jam and put students at risk of catching Covid19.
The staggered reporting dates were reached following the guidance of President Museveni.
In his New Year’s address to the nation on December 31, 2021, Museveni tasked the Ministry of Education and Sports to come up with a detailed plan to prevent and mitigate against road traffic congestion in the Kampala Metropolitan Area during re-opening of schools on Monday, January 10, 2022.
“Subsequently, the Ministry of Education and Sports engaged stakeholders from KCCA, Wakiso, Mukono, and Mpigi, district local governments, Security, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Works and Transport among others,” said the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The ministry has now released the guidelines and reporting dates for each class for schools in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and Mpigi.
All learners in Day Schools shall report on Monday the 10th of January 2022 for Classes.
All learners in Boarding Schools in the districts of Wakiso, Mpigi, Mukono, and Kampala shall follow a staggered reporting plan with effect from Monday, 10 January 2022.
No Boarding Students in the concerned districts shall report for School earlier than Monday the 10th of January 2022.
Students in International Schools whether offering Day or Boarding School shall also comply with re-opening that is NOT any earlier than Monday the 10th of January 2022.
For Mpigi and Wakiso Districts, boarding students in A-level and pupils in lower primary will report on January 10.
Boarding O-level students and P5, P6 and P7 pupils will report on Wednesday, January 12.
For Kampala and Mukono Districts, Boarding A-level students and lower primary pupils will report on Tuesday, January 11.
Boarding O-level students and P5, P6 and P7 pupils will report on January 13.
Schools which have already communicated to parents a staggered reporting plan that goes beyond 13th January 2022 may retain such a Plan provided no learners report before Monday the 10th of January 2022.
It is the responsibility of the learner’s respective parents or guardians to ensure that the learner is provided with a mask to wear when travelling to school while using public transport means.
We appeal to all concerned Boarding Schools in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, and Mpigi districts to adhere to this area-specific re-opening plan.
