SCHOOL REOPENING: Revised School Calendar ‘Ready’

An official from first lady Janet Kataaha Museveni’s Ministry of Education and Sports has said the government’s revised school calendar is almost ready, urging education sector to be a little more patient.

There has been demands on the the education ministry to release the revised school calendar to allow parents and schools prepare for reopening.

Schools have remained open for many months between 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid19 pandemic.

But in his recent address on the Covid19 response, President Yoweri Museveni said schools would reopen in January 2022.

Now, as pressure piles on the ministry of education to release the revised school calendar, Dr Kedrees Turyagyenda, the Director Education standards at the ministry, says the calendar is being scrutinized by the top management.

“We have a calendar on how to reopen that is now with the top management for review and approval before we can roll it out to the public,” Dr Turyagyenda said in a recent media interview.

She assured education sector players the calendar will be released at the right time.

“All of us are anxious, but one by one, we are moving forward. Don’t worry; the plan will be released. When it is released, we shall work with all our partners to effect it,” she noted.

The director of standards further noted that the ministry was putting in place measures to ensure safe reopening. Turyagyenda went on to encourage Ugandans to go for vaccination.

“We have been able to meet and consult various people. We have come up with strategies that I think will enable us to reopen once and for all. I don’t think we are being too slow. We just want to reopen safely and sustainably,” she said.

“I appeal to everyone to go and get vaccinated. If you don’t, you are delaying the reopening process. Ugandans are one of the most resilient people in the world. I am confident that the children have grown physically and mentally and will be able to understand what they are going to learn much faster and more easily.”
