Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has revealed government’s plan regarding the reopening of schools.
President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s June 18 lockdown announcement disrupted the phased reopening of education institutions for some classes.
For over a year now, some learners have not stepped in classrooms.
When she broached the issue during the release, on July 16, of the 2020 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), education Minister Janet Museveni said it was premature to talk about reopening. (See: School reopening: Janet Museveni Speaks Out).
But as she delivered a statement on the status of government’s response to the Covid19 pandemic, PM Nabbanja laid out the Museveni administration plan on reopening.
First, Government plans to keep education institutions for as long as a lockdown is in place.
“Enforcement to ensure that all schools and institutions of learning remain closed for 42 days has been undertaken and crackdown on errant ones continues,” said Nabbanja.
She then talked of a phased reopening plan and of mass vaccination.
“The Ministry of Education and Sports and the Ministry of Health are developing a comprehensive plan for a phased reopening as we work towards mass vaccination,” she continued.
Until then, learners, schools and parents have to make do with alternative methods of learning and teaching.
The Ministry of Education and Sports has put in place alternative learning initiatives and will continue to perfect them for the rural areas.”
