Education minister Janet Kataaha Museveni has revealed that her ministry will soon release a comprehensive school calendar for all education institutions as well as announce selection dates for senior one (S1) and senior five (S5) students.
Last month, President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni announced primary and secondary schools would reopen in January 2022.
Universities and other tertiary institutions will reopen earlier in November 2021.
But beyond that announcement it was still unclear how long the terms would be and how lost time would be recovered.
Speaking during the commissioning of the rehabilitated Corby House at Gayaza High School on October 06, Minister Janet Museveni emphasized the president’s school reopening position.
“Let me use this opportunity to say something about the reopening of schools. For now, as the President announced, the tertiary institutions will open at the beginning of November and the rest of our learners in January next year,” she said.
“The Ministry is making the necessary preparations to ensure a safe reopening, we are appealing for your support and cooperation as major stakeholders in this exercise.”
She then told Ugandans a revised calendar and roadmap for selection of Senior One and Senior Five would be out soon.
“We shall soon announce the selection dates for senior one and senior five and a comprehensive Calendar will also be released so schools and parents can prepare adequately,” said the minister.
She also preached hope and urged parents to play their role while their children are at home.
“In the meantime, we call upon all our stakeholders to get involved in the education of our children while they are at home,” appealed Janet Museveni.
“Let me reiterate Government’s commitment to the education of our children and urge all of you to be instruments of hope as we await the full reopening of our schools.”
On the commissioning of Corby House at Gayaza High School, the education minister said the restoration of the House burnt in a March 2020 fire is “an assurance from God that He who was able to save our children from the fire that gutted their dormitory, that none of them was hurt, is able to restore all things.”
