SCHOOL REOPENING: First Lady Janet Museveni Reveals Government’s Planned Interventions Before Reopening of Primary, Secondary Schools

First Lady and minister of education Janet Kataaha Museveni has hinted on what President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government’s is doing to prepare schools for reopening.

On December 14, Janet Museveni opened the Education and Sports Sector Review Workshop for 2021 in Kampala. The review is being held under the theme: ‘Education System Recovery and Resilience for Sustainable Learning Outcomes.’

The education minister said the theme was meant to inspire education sector players to “adopt creative and sustainable ways of ensuring that teaching/training and learning continue to take place despite the challenges posed by the Covid19 pandemic.”

Expected to announce a comprehensive school reopening plan and a revised calendar soon, Ms Museveni hinted on what was being done to ensure safe reopening.

First, she confirmed that education institutions would reopen next month as President Museveni has directed in his addresses on the Covid19 response.

She added that her ministry was undertaking the necessary preparations ahead of the reopening.

“Regarding the re-opening of schools, you recall that His Excellency the President announced a full re-opening of the economy including schools and institutions in January 2022,” said the first lady.

“Guided by that pronouncement, preparations are being made to open.”

So far, the education ministry, Ms Museveni noted, has concluded inspection of schools while instructors would be trained on how to handle post-Covid19 learners.

Government also hopes to restore school buildings in government institutions.

“Inspection has been done to establish the readiness of our schools and institutions, teachers are being trained and we plan to rehabilitate dilapidated structures in various schools and institutions,” said the first lady.
